The NV3500/4500 are 'splash lubrication', no oil pump to push the oil thru a cooler.

I've seen them often on REALLY heavy duty trucks. They are used to cool the engine oil. It's fairly common. GM had an issue back in the 1990's with them blowing the gasket between the block and oil filter adapter.
That would be an oil cooler not a transmission cooler.
