Like Heyyou said, if you are in drive, either moving slow or stopped, it will go right into 4 hi. You can also go back to 2 hi. If you want to go into 4 lo, stop and put it in park. Now, if you're in 4 hi and it won't go back to 2 hi, drive slowly backward. You had to do this on earlier trucks because the chain would tighten up in the transfer case. Going backward released the tension. The gears in front are just a wee bit shorter than the back. 3.55 rear will have 3.54 front gears to keep the chains from over running.
