Default Oil Filter Recommendations

Hey guys, I'm getting ready to change the oil in my 1994 Ram 2500. It has the 5.9 Magnum. Typically I use the Walmart brand full synthetic oil and one of the more expensive Fram filters that Walmart has in stock. This last oil change on my other pickup I used Castrol full synthetic (I don't remember what specifically) because the previous owner had used Castrol oil. I've heard bad things lately about Fram filters, so looking for a better filter to use on my Ram. I've heard good things about Mobile 1 oil and filters. I saw Walmart had decent prices on the Mopar filters, but can't really find who manufacturers them, so? I won't be driving it a ton, guessing maybe around 2,500 miles a year. Guess I'm mainly looking for oil filter recommendations, but oil recommendations would be interesting too. Thanks in advance!

Wix is a good oil filter. Personally, I use Purolator standard oil filters for years on my trucks and have never been disappointed.

I did some research on oil filters and Royal Purple has a good filter, Good as it has good flow threw it and still traps dirt down to a small amount. It beat out most others it was compared to. And if you are still using the small style filter upgrade to the larger Fram PH8A stye.

I know the Fram filters a cheaply made, but I still use them because I like the grip coating they have on the end, makes it much easier to install and remove and they are easy to source at Wal-Mart. Also, I use the PH8A which is much bigger than the stock filter. Would be curious if there is another brand that is easy to source that is the same size as the PH8A, then I might be tempted to switch. The key for my filter choice is how easy is it to get one locally. Note: I have a 4wd, don't think the PH8A fits the 2wd. (not enough room to install it).

There should be an interchange book available where you buy filters, that will tell you which is also compatible.

A lot of people like WIX. They may be good but I always find the purolator FL1A's for like half so I typically use those. I like that Rotella T4 because it has a fair bit of zinc in it.

Purolator filter part numbers that interchange with Fram's PH8A are L30001 and L30341. Each filter is a tad bit over 5" long. They should fit any 5.2 and 5.9 engine with either 2WD or 4WD. Just FYI, Chrysler made a 90 degree adapter for small block engines that allows for oil filter access in odd situations.

A lot of times getting good stuff locally is an issue, Amazon delivers and you don't have to drive to get it. Do some research and don't go by what you hear. Compare filtration and flow rates filter to filter and see witch one is better.

but the K&N PS-3001 is $9.99 on Amazon.
