Default 97 Ram 1500 VSS Issue

I have a 97 2wd Ram with replaced NV3500 manual tranny. The speedo, naturally, was not working when purchased the truck and on looking into replacing the VSS there is a cap where the existing VSS should go. The wiring is run down by the tranny but no existing VSS on the side of transmission. So my question is, is there a way to install/remove the cap to install new VSS or is my Speedo never going to work?

If the cap exists as you stated, you will likely have to pull it to take a look. If the shaft has the part for the VSS (which you would have to purchase if you don't already have it) to engage onto it, that would get your speedo working again.. For more information, you can take a look at the service manual for your year truck to get a better visualization of what I'm speaking of.

Links for downloading the service manual can be found here - https://dodgeforum.com/forum/2nd-gen...e-manuals.html

The output shaft needs to be splined when you look under that cover. That's where the VSS drive gear goes. The VSS itself is the driven gear, and a signal generator. The harness plugs into that. You will also need the bolt, and retainer, if those aren't holding the cap in. If they aren't, is the bolt hole there? Is it threaded???
