Default Transmission thumping/sticking/No 4th gear?

Hi All,

Second post in a night, been holding on to these for awhile, hoping my trouble shooting will get me somewhere but I think I pooped the bed on this.

I drive a 01 Ram 1500 5.9 4x4.

Noticed my truck doesn't shift to 4th gear, or if it does, it immediately red lines like crazy and bogs down, terrifies me when it happens if I don't pay attention, I try really hard to not let that happen. I can replicate this pretty easily, just need to be on a highway to do, this truck has been like this since I bought it 2 years ago. When driving in rush hour traffic, it seems like the tranny gets confused and gears up, then down then up again as I'm accelerating/breaking while driving around 50km/h. When the gears change, its good thump/thunk sound and the entire vehicle lunges a wee bit. I changed the tranny filter, and added some new, but re-used the old as I have read/seen people say to re-use the oil on old transmissions, I also made a boo boo and added the thickening oil to it as I was confused on what tranny slipping was, my tranny never slips. The oil was burnt and black, starting to regret my choice, thoughts on this?

Should I put new fluid in and adjust the bands as people have mentioned here? Or leave it and pray this thing lasts another month?

Thank you,

The oil was burnt and black,
Where did you read to reuse old fluid? Especially if it's burnt! Change the fluid and and just the bands.

Scotty Kilmer/Kilmore on YouTube, and some random posts here….Derp.

I will try and find them later. I will replace the fluid tonight and adjust the bands and report back.

The old fluid and not flushing the transmission are a myth. The transmission was already junk and having problems when they changed the fluid. The dirt and metal filings were keeping the worn out transmission limping along. At that point, when the fluid is changed, the tranny quits working and people blame the new fluid. The fluid and filter should be changed every 30-40,000 miles, before the fluid gets burnt.

Changed the tranny fluid, adjusted the bands and the TV cable and it shifts better.

only problem is now 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd gears shift only when I get to 2500 rpm and I have to let off the gas and it kind of thinks into next gear. If I keep increasing the RPMs to 3500 it switches smoothly. Still can’t get to 4ty gear yet even on a hill.

It used to be 1500 to switch gears with my foot off the gas or 2500 and it would switch itself with a thunk into next gear. Any ideas? Could it be the band adjustment?

Try playin' with the TV cable a bit. Make sure it moves freely too.

That did it. It lowered the rpm’s at which is changes to the next gear. 2nd and 3rd gear at 2k and 4th at 2500.

I got 4th gear back as well.

still thumps into gear but not as bad as before but definitely still noticeable.

Thank you!
