46RE transmission shift question
This is more to see what some of you may think. As you know I rebuilt this transmission and question the shift times. I am currently looking to ordering the TV cable hopefully this week. This thread is more for general opinions and thoughts. Going to try and explain the pattern.
0 to 46 mph
1st to 2nd 2000 to 2200
2nd to 3rd 2200 to 2500 These are the shift points coming from around dropping down to 1500 then back up to next shift.
3rd to 4th is a very quick shift adding maybe 3000 to the last shift point. This meaning the rpm don't get a chance to go down before it is in 3rd. Sometime during this it will down shift once or sometimes twice before next gear.
I don't even feel the next shift but rpms drop down to around 1500 and it drives fine.
1st to second 2nd seems good but 2nd to 3rd seem to drag out and sometimes it feels like it slips a tiny bit. I don't know how to explain the sound but it's almost acting like it's topping out that gear but makes a light rattle sound. If that makes any sense?
What is weird is that sometimes it will shift pretty good and sometimes it will do this pattern. It doesn't matter if there is traffic or open road. I have changed everything electrical wise and the only thing I can change is the TV cable. I am guessing since adjusting it either doesn't help or it throws shifts off so maybe it's stretched? I took it loose and cleaned/oiled it so it's moving freely. Spring isn't stretched at all.
Where I feel shift issue to me is 2nd to 3rd seems to drag out and 3rd to 4th is very fast and short shift. I can only hope the cable is just worn out and replacing it will brings shifts back to a normal range between all gears.
I will say this as well. When I take it to the highway where I accelerate up to speed. It shifts just fine. This means giving it more gas to reach 55 at a faster rate then in regular traffic. If you understand what I am trying to say. Not the best explainer. lol

My truck (in my sig) does the same thing. Sometimes, it will shift perfectly, other times, it may hold a gear longer than I think it should. I changed the electronics in the trans, and the output speed sensor, and that improved things some, but, it still does it fairly regularly. I have NOT been able to figure out why.....

I sent Rock Auto a message seeing if they could get a image of the part they are listing since the number from it refers to 2001 to 2003. I'm also going to get in there and double check the cable to make sure I reinstalled it correctly. My symptoms could be a simple fix or may need more attention. My main concern is 2nd to 3rd being long shift that makes a rattle type sound before it shifts or sometimes a slight slip before shift to a extremely short shift from 3rd to 4th. What is weird is if you take off fast seeing what it would do. It would shift through the gears just fine. I have backed off driving too much so that I don't damage anything. It's hard to explain the symptoms and I tried to record it but you can't hear the weird type of rattle sound. It's like the shift doesn't happen till the max of the gear but yet the rpm range isn't way out there either. You drive your vehicle enough that you know something is off. Sorry I ask a lot of questions or repeat them sometimes.Getting opinions and ideas gives me some directions or maybe shows me something I could have missed or over looked.
I'm sure what you mean by one spacer? I put everything back in it came out. Other then the Zip Kit. It just seems like one gear shift is dragging out and another is a very short shift adding maybe 300 rpms. The the odd down shift for no real reason here and there. My guess would be maybe the TV cable isn't right or maybe stretch enough to effect shifts? I haven't heard back from Rock Auto but I figure that may take a couple of days. I can say if here and there/sometimes. I wouldn't mind but when it does this weird shift deal, it happens all the way home which is about a 20 minute drive from work to home. At least the rpms part isn't like way up there but it's definitely maxing out the 2nd to 3rd shift. Thanks guys.
You could have put up to 4 spacers in the valve body for how firm you wanted the shift to be from your Zip Kit. I put 1 spacer in mine. I might go with 2 depending on the gear change and 35's.

I just feel that if both gears are leveled out, then everything would be good. I'm still going to pull both ends loose on TV cable to do another good cleaning and lube the line again to make sure.
At this point, the shifts seem a lot better and more close to normal. Guess I found a decent spot with the TV cable. Trying to save up some money soon for a new one. Got hit by some bills. lol
