Default 2000 Ram 1500 Trans Problems

So I just bought a 2000 ram 1500 rcsb with a v6 and 42re. It's a clean Nevada truck with no rust, still even has black paint on the frame rails. Anyways, the guy I bought it from said the transmission has issues. I haven't driven it yet but when I looked at it and started it the trans whined in every gear except for park. When I put it into drive or reverse while on the brakes, the motor bogs down so far it starts to shutter and then back to normal idle. The previous owner said once it gets hot, the truck will not move. From looking at the Cherokee forums, The only thought I have on it is the torque converter has gone bad. Throw out your ideas on what's wrong.
thanks in advance

How many miles on it? Could be as simple as failing electronics.

The truck has 167k miles on it. I was thinking it was something mechanical as the fluid is really dark and smells really burnt

Then it's likely rebuild time.

Your torque converter lock up is bogging the engine. That transmission is toast. My' '96 has about the same mileage and is on it's third transmission.
