Default front axle

Can I use a replacement front axle shaft with ABS tone ring in my Dana 44 that doesn't have ABS? Answer, bought an axle with the ABS ring on it after measuring everything installed it and the only problem I had was it hit the grease fitting on the lower ball joint. Not going to be easy to grease it but it works fine.

The tone ring's in the wheel bearing on 2nd Gens. Nothing to do with axleshafts.

DANA 747601X
Fits 1997 Ram 1500. ABS ring built in.

OP provided almost no information, but ABS rings were quite obviously part of front axles on Gen IIs. I have one myself.

FWIW the ends of the axles appear to be machined the same, length and spline count the same. Worth checking out, who knows.

Interesting. I guess this is only applicable if the truck has 4 wheel ABS and not rear wheel ABS like most 2nd gens...

Correct. My '95 2500 has two wheel. '98 1500 and '99 2500 4x4s are both four wheel ABS. All have tow packages, might be common option for folks buying those.
Along those lines, the EMS/Yukon part time front hub conversion I put on the '95 does not cover four wheel ABS.

Thank you! So have you transferred the tone ring from one axle to another? Does it just press on like most?

Do not know. Never needed to change either of them, and the 2500 with the manual conversion only had two wheel ABS to begin with. Not sure if the axle will work for OP's situation. My guess is he's trying to do something for free with a junk axle instead of changing out an outer stub or cardan joint.

(01 1500) If it fits and works you're golden. I have the heavy duty and tow package options, it only has rear ABS. It has 5/6 spring packs vs 4/5 spring packs too.
