I have a 96 Ram 1500 4x4 5.2. These last few weeks I’ve noticed the rear rpm’s fluctuating then returning to normal then fluctuating again. It’s also been surging while driving on the highway and it surges when I take off from a dead stop sometimes. Today when I left work the rpm’s shot up then started fluctuating erratically. I put it into drive and the truck died. There are times where it’ll idle fine in traffic and then randomly idle high and then return to normal.A few months ago I replaced the plenum gasket because I had oil inside the intake manifold. All new sensors have been installed on the throttle body (standard brand). New o2 sensors. Rebuilt transmission 3 years ago. New crank sensor 3years ago. New cat converter 3 years ago. New sparks plugs 2 years ago. New plug wires 3years ago. New ignition coil. New pcv valve and grommet. New crankcase filter and grommet. I’ve done a smoke test and haven’t noticed any leaks. It’s not pulling any codes. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

 

What brand O2 sensors? What type of plugs are in in it? Fixed the Plenum yet?

 

Installed NGK o2 sensors a few months back. Replaced plenum a few months back. Can’t remember what spark plugs I bought. I think my next big purchase may be the Hughes Airgap intake so I never have to worry about the plenum again.

The crank sensor - is it an OEM crank sensor that was replaced 3 years ago or was an aftermarket sensor installed? I ask, as I had installed an aftermarket (Borg-Warner) crank sensor and it caused the truck to shut off sporadically and misfire periodically. Replaced it with a Mopar crank sensor and no more issues.

Also, are the spark plugs platinum? This engine tends to like copper plugs, as the platinum plugs have been known to cause misfire issues..

 

The crank position sensor wasn't OEM, do you know where I can find an OEM replacement? Also, I am not sure on the spark plugs but I'm willing to buy a set of copper ones if they perform better. Thanks!!

Once you have the part number for the OEM crank sensor, you can do a Google search for it. You can also call a local dealer to verify the part number to ensure it hasn't been superseded and obtain the new part number. You can also obtain the part from the dealer, but they will likely have to order it. You can sometimes find dealers selling them on eBay as they liquidate overstocked items.

 

Quick question, I have been trying to locate OEM sensors for my 96 dodge ram 1500 5.2L. I downloaded the PDF you sent to locate the OEM part number for the crankshaft position sensor. I found one on ebay with the same part number but the listing says it fits Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ. I know the Jeep and Rams had the same engine so the sensor should work with my 96 ram correct? I don't buy parts from Ebay. Too many issues, fake etc.

 

If I can't find the OEM part, would NTK crankshaft position sensor be a comparable replacement?
