Default 2000 Ram 1500 5.9 Custom - Randomly dies without warning

Hi there. My 2000 Ram 1500 will randomly shut off completely while driving down the road at any given time. When it’s driving/running it runs absolutely great with no issues. We took it in 6 months ago and they replaced the CPU. The CPU they put in was faulty so they had to send out for another CPU. From what they told me, it’s hit and miss with the CPU’s and it is likely it could need to be replaced again as it didn’t really resolve the issue. Is it true that the CPU replacement could still be the issue? I’m looking to replace it myself if so through a website that pre loads the CPU to your VIN. Not willing to continue spending money at this auto repair shop with no resolve. Any help appreciated. Again, there is no pattern as to when the truck shuts off. It’s completely random

Are there any codes? Will it restart immediately after it dies? Or does it have to cool down some first? It *could* be the PCM, but, getting a couple in a row with the *same* problem, isn't very likely. Doesn't the shop offer any kind of warranty? Seems to me, if THEY replace a part, it doesn't solve the problem, and they want to replace it AGAIN, that should be on them. Not you.

Moving this to second gen ram tech section for ya. Welcome to DF!

So it actually does not really throw codes when this happens. Seems like it’s not picking up the communication. I saw another thread where someone replaced the crank sensor and it resolved the issue. Essentially, everything they said in that post is what’s happening with my truck. And you are correct in that I would love to hold the repair shop accountable, except the truck belonged to my dad who had a massive amount of health issues over the last year so the truck was naturally put on the back burner. And now it’s been over a year so I’m not able to get them to warranty anything on it

Crank sensor IS a good candidate for these types of issues. You can try replacing it, and see what happens. ONLY use a mopar crank sensor though. These trucks really don't care for the aftermarket fellers.... You don't have to get one from a dealer though, just get the part number, search on that, you can generally find 'em cheaper. Just make sure that it IS a GENUINE mopar sensor.
