Default Transmission issues

I’m new to fixing cars. I had a bad transfer case and the tail shaft was broken (1999 1500 5.2). So I took one out of a parts truck (2001 1500 5.2) and swapped it over. Now I don’t have a reverse. I have full fluid, the bands are adjusted properly you can hear/feel it go into reverse it sort of clunks for lack of a better word. But it acts like a neutral. With the wheels off the ground the tires spin in reverse but as soon as there’s any resistance it slips. There was no metal shavings or anything in the pan. What could it be? Thanks.

Did you take the whole trans? Or just the O/D housing and such?

Are the shift levers properly adjusted? Wondering if the selector is putting the transmission in between neutral and reverse?

I thought the same thing so I completely removed the linkage and manually put it in reverse and it still did the same thing.

I only replaced the tail shaft containing the overdrive unit and the transfer case.

Did you drop the pan once the reverse issue popped up to see if there was anything in the pan of if something may have come apart where the band is activated?
