Default Best 46re Transmission

I need opinions. Who makes the best most reliable 46re transmission in your opinion? I’m looking to upgrade. I drive a 96 Ram 1500 5.2 4wd. It’s a daily driver. Looking for one that is strong and will last. Thanks!

This may be a stupid question but do those Viper Transmissions from PATC come with all the necessary electrical components? Governor pressure sensor, solenoid etc? Are they ready to install upon arrival? Thanks

Yep. Complete trans, end to end, with the correct electronics for your year truck. (which is required information to order one.) They have been in business just this side of forever, know what they are doing, and even the reviews are decent. I think you have to specify the torque converter you want...... pay attention to that aspect please.

Would you say a lock up torque converter 1800 stall is sufficient for a daily driver? I'm easy on the gas pedal and don't give mine a lot of hell haha.

Definitely want lockup, and if your engine is still stock, 1800 would likely be pretty good. A bit more power out of the hole. (I think stock is 1600????)

I purchased a new torque converter from Precision New Hampton when I had my 46RE rebuilt a few years ago and since I tend to tow a fair bit, they recommended a 1200 stall to put more load on the motor starting out. It's worked well to-date.

Really??? That seems counter-intuitive to me though. Isn't the whole idea of a higher stall to take advantage of the torque multiplication going on in the TC??? I suppose a lower stall would produce less heat though, which is never a bad thing.

The 5.9 engine produces a lot of torque down low. In addition, the lower stall helps to keep the heat down on the transmission.

Update: I went with the PATC Viper Series 2 transmission for my 96 Ram. Customer service was excellent. After everything I've seen and read about their transmissions on this forum makes me feel good about it. One installed, I plan on adding the Derale external filter for piece of mind. I ended up going with an 1800 stall lock up TC. I'll keep you posted. Thanks for all the input!
