Default 47re no gears when warm

I have a 96 12 valve with a 47 RE will shift through all gears when first started up about five minutes and it loses all gears does not try to engage. I have been told torque converter I have one. I can put in it, but I want to see if anyone else has any ideas. The fluid is pink smells a little burnt, but isn’t terrible.

Is the transmission full of fluid as measured on the dipstick when warm?

An easy test with the electronically controlled transmissions is to unplug the connector on the side of the transmission and see if 1,2,3 and reverse can be manually shifted. Overdrive and lock-up won't work obviously.

thank you I’ll try it! And if it does have the gears, what would I look into next?

Have you plugged in an OBD2 scanner? Getting any stored or pending codes related to the transmission before you unplug the electrical connector on the transmission?
