Default Shiftless Dodge

I loaned my neighbor my trailer to haul his mower to the shop for repair. His 1997 (I think) Ram 2500 has a bad transmission. It will move when cold but when it begins to warm up, it fails. He only wants what he paid for the wheels and tires for it. I don't need it but I'm thinking of getting it and putting a used transmission into it.

It's got the 360 Magnum (I'm old and not metric yet) and is a decent truck. Especially if I get the brushes and rollers out to paint it. My question is, what transmission does it have? What years were they used?

The automatic transmission in it is a 46RE. Years '96 and '97 are a perfect match. Is it 4x4?

Before tossing a trans at it, make sure that it isn't simply an electronics problem..... That would be a cheap fix.

If you connect an OBD2 scanner to it, are you getting any pending or stored transmission related codes to possibly help to narrow down the transmission issue?

Yes. A different body but similar to my '96.

He took it to a shop I recommended. I've done business with them for over 40 years. They said solenoids were going bad. Heavy friction material in the filter and junk in the solenoids. They could patch it with solenoids and a flush but it would fail again in a few months. No, at 145,000 miles, the factory transmission is dying.
