Default 1998 Ram 1500 5.2 V8, crank no start intermittent.

So I am not familiar with Dodge pickups. I got this truck recently and the truck began to crank and only run with the throttle pedal pressed down. It wont idle just sputters and shuts off. I cleaned the throttlebody, replaced the MAP sensor and IAC valve, replaced the battery as it was old and the truck is still doing it. I noticed that the linkage for the the cruise control servo is funny in a sense. The cable slides through the plastic clip that attaches it to the throttlebody lever when the throttle pedal is depressed to the floor and the engine is revved up. I was going to replaced that servo and cable but I dont see how the cruise control servo would keep the engine from running. I had my neighbor hold the pedal down and then I actuated the throttlebody by hand the the truck stayed running until I let go and I noticed that the throttle body just closed up and killed the engine after my neighbor let off the gas pedal. Does this mean that cable that comes of the acclerator pedal is bad, somehow stretched ? I did notice when I have the pedal down to the floor the throttle body flaps are only open a little bit and not fully open. I am not mechanically inclined and I live in a smal rural town. The local shop wants to charge $300 to diag and $150 for every additional diag. They quoted $600 to fix and thats seems way too high. Just trying to fix it myself but I am kinda confused. Thanks to all who can make sense of what I am saying and lend a hand.

Throttle cable likely is stretched, and it wouldn't hurt to replace it, or, find some other way to take up some of the slack. But no, it won't cause the engine to not idle.

If you have an aftermarket IAC, that is going to be at least part of the problem...... These trucks just don't like aftermarket sensors in critical areas..... So, get a Mopar IAC, disconnect the battery, remove the current one, clean the IAC well and port REALLY 'well'..... install mopar IAC, reconnect battery, turn ignition to "On" (not start), count to ten, (don't touch ANYTHING) THEN start the truck. PCM should figger out idle pretty quick.

Of course, this assumes you are NOT getting a check engine lite, indicating there is some other problem with the truck.

Yea no check engine lights or stored codes. The reason the truck wont idle is because the thottle body plates slam shut as soon as I let off the throttle pedal. I thought the IAC would fix that but I believe that the accelorator pedal cable is so stretched that the plates wont stay open. Unless the IAC controls that. I replaced the IAC and the truck fired up and ran so I shut it off to start it again to make sure it would start again and I got the crank no start issue. I crank and stomp the pedal down and she fires up but as soon as I let off the plates close and no more air which shuts down the engine. I have a feeling that accelerator pedal cable is my issue.

The plates don't need to be open, that's what the IAC is for. The aftermarket fellers just don't react fast enough, or, they over-react, and you get odd behavior.
