Default Rear axel rebuild

So I have a 2001 dodge ram 1500 four-wheel-drive Laramie with the 5.9 V8 and I need some advice on proper kit to get to replace my rear end bearings, etc. I don’t have a lot of info on the rear end, but I do have a photo of the glove box codes

I don’t know if there is any benefit to changing the ratio on the gears to get better economy or anything, but even just information on what I have to do to replace it as factory

It should be a 9-1/4 rear in that truck. You will need a bearing kit, which should include the carrier and pinion bearings, pinion seal and rear cover gasket. Here's an example - https://www.ebay.com/itm/201386091216

You will also need to determine if you have a limited slip unit in the rear or not. If so, it's likely that the clutches in it are shot and need to be replaced. You can also find the limited slip clutches via numerous outlets, if needed.

You can reference the rebuild procedure in the service manual. You can download the service manual for your year truck via this link - https://dodgeforum.com/forum/2nd-gen...e-manuals.html

If you've not done this job before, especially if you're changing gear ratios, rear end rebuilds are best left to folks that do this type of work regularly.

As for your existing gear ratio, you should be able to determine it by either the tag that is on one of the cover bolts or by the ratio that's typically stamped on the ring gear.

3.55 gears, it's listed on the option sheet.

Also, 4x4, so, it isn't just one set of gears that would need to be changed. Front and rear ratios MUST match, else, things go BOOM!

thanks I’ll take a look at the axle when I get to my truck later. In the meantime, I did a vin decode search and came up with the build sheet. This is a screenshot of the section that explains the axles if it’s helpful.

If it had a limited slip you would see a DSA code under the DRB.

For me, when I emailed Dodge Customer Care two years ago, the build sheet info they emailed me for my 2001 had both three- and four-letter codes:

I have a list of a ton of sales codes and all are 3 letter or letter and #. I was able to figure out what they are by leaving off the last letter. Don't know what the fourth letter is.
