Default Reverse lights

I have a 1998 ram 1500 5.2 with a 5 speed manual transmission. I’m working on the reverse lights and they only come on if I hold the shifter in place. If I simply shift it into reverse and turn the shifter loose the lights go out. I have to hold the shifter to the right to get the lights to stay on. I’ve replaced the switch twice and I get the same results. Is the shifter bad?

Maybe something worn on the shifter, that is supposed to push the switch then.
