Unfortunately, Ma Mopar took the 727 transmission, added overdrive to it and made it computer controllable by adding electrical solenoids/electronics. In addition, it became accessible via OBD2. At that point in 1996, the transmission became the 46RE and the cost to rebuild or repair it went up exponentially, with all of these new "features/parts"...

I don't even want to guess how much it's going to cost. The transmission only has 62,000 on it but ya gotta do what ya gotta do

Thing is, by being electronically controlled, the trans itself is SIMPLER. All the programming and 'smart parts' aren't part of a rebuild. For the 4?RE series trans, the electronics are dirt cheap, you can get everything for under 200 bucks..... Last time I got a quote to rebuild one, it was right around 2500 bucks..... But, everything has gotten stupid expensive of late, and I suspicion that is only gonna get worse.... Tariffs on imports will be passed on to consumers. The foreign manufacturers won't be eating those costs. We will.

I doubt if many US suppliers will fill in the gap unless the price/demand is worth it. In speaking with my local trans rebuilder, he is having a harder and harder time sourcing selected vintage automatic transmission parts and when he does find them, the prices just keep going up...

I would try an auto supplier like rockauto and find out a price on a reman transmission. If they can still get them.
