Default 1997 dodge ram 2500 5.9 crankshaft position sensor, does it really need to be OEM?

I currently own a 1997 dodge ram 2500 with a 5.9, just recently got it out of the shop for a crankshaft position sensor, truck cut off an would not start, had it towed to the shop, once they got it off the tow truck it started, they replaced the crankshaft position sensor ( like I asked them too) with a part from advance auto ( I think) they started it many times the 2 weeks they had it. No issues I drove it home, and after 2 weeks of driving it every few days to town or the dump it cut off again and wouldn't start, should I replace the crankshaft position sensor with OEM part number 56027870 or 68569185AA, it's 4 wheel drive, the eighth letter in the vin number is "z" if that's something special, I replaced the PCM the first time it did this and still wouldn't start, should I look to a faulty distributor pickup ( camshaft position sensor) I seen somewhere about a ASD ( automatic Shutdown relay , I changed that and still no start, what am I missing? Like I said before it did this before ( no starting) and the tow truck driver delivered it to the shop and it started right up, that's why I'm thinking it's electrical problem, I don't hear the fuel pump turn on, I tried hitting the fuel tank bottom but still nothing. I'm wondering if this truck is possessed. Please give me some ideas. Thanks.

Is the "check engine" light on? Have you scanned the PCM for any pending or stored codes?

The key dance will work to get codes if you don't have a scanner.

no check engine light on, I'm assuming they( the shop) checked for codes. I was reading something where people say dodges are really picky about OEM sensors, ordered a OEM crankshaft position sensor, hope this will do it.

They are picky about crank sensors and a few others on the 5 volt bus. Best to use OEM or possibly Delphi..

I did the CPS on my Jeep a few years ago. I tried cheaping out. I tried 3 of them from AZ, O'R and Napa. None work. I got a Mopar sensor off EBay and worked. The Truck crapped one too and I bought a Mopar one to replace it and worked.

Yes, get a cummins part... Check genisgarage.com for it. On mine i tried a ngk (?) from rock auto for both can & crank and had nothing but problems. Swapped in the oem cummins part and zero issues. Funny thing was at the time the cummins part was cheaper than the ngk, just had to drive to go get it.

Does cummins make the crank sensors for the non-diesel (gas) motors, too?

Any ideas on what to check besides the crankshaft position sensor ? Change the distributor pickup also? ( camshaft sensor) while waiting for parts I cleaned the throttle body real good, cleaned the IAC valve ( or whatever is the sensor on the back of the throttle body) anything else I am missing to take care of this no start issue
