Default Block Heater

Hey, I know the 5.9 Magnum came with a block heater. I was surprised that it only has 600W.

Anyone here have used something more powerful? Or are the 600W enough?

Seems like the coolant will just barely warm up after hours with this small sized heater.

There really isn't that large a volume of coolant, especially if the heater is in a freeze plug..... Personally, I like the fellers that plumb into the heater line, and actually circulate coolant thru the engine. The radiator stays cold, but, you actually get some useful heat as soon as you start it up.

I was also thinking about either have two block heaters on each side in a freeze plug or one block heater and one in the heater hose.

The hose heaters are pretty inefficient.

From my research 600W are good for heating small 2L engines, the general recommend 700-800 to 1000W for big V8s. Don't see why Dodge was so conservative.

There may just not be enough room for a larger one in the freeze plugs.

Buddy of mine had one of the heater hose pump style heaters. Parked outside, in sub-freezing temps, he would leave it run overnight, and in the dark and early, when he had to go to work, start the truck, and instantly have at least decent heat..... Engine took care of the rest.

A 600w heater is enough. FYI, It draws 5 amps at 120v.

Have to get one that fits the freeze plug anyway.

As an FYI, the freeze plug hole is 1-5/8".

Yeah, but how much room is there in there for the heating element.

An oil pan heater would be more beneficial or like mentioned, a circulating one.

Well ' I use the block heater & a 200 Watt magnetic oil pan heater ' so far it worked good 👍 enough At 4-Deg.f .
