Default Is it the fuel pump

Bought a 96 1500 with the 5.9 magnum, it is straight piped has 214,000 miles on it and is slow to start up. The starter is fairly new and doesn’t sound bad at all. The battery doesn’t seem to be an issue as nothing seems to weak/ dim. Starting to think it’s the fuel pump from things I’ve read. I also revved the engine and it started to have a rough idle for a couple of seconds after but haven’t done it since

I wonder what it takes to do a fuel pressure test on your rail? .... A fuel pressure tester kit is reasonably cheap at Amazon .... Then you can test the pressure and decide if it is a fuel pump issue.

I'm more inclined to think it is in a tuneup issue, need new plugs or wires .... or a sensor is not working correctly and choking the air flow as it should.

A lot of possibilities, will need to start running some test though to see where the system is failing.

96 will have a schraeder valve on the fuel rail. Simply matter to just screw the gauge onto it, and hit the key a couple times, see what ya get. You can *rent* a fuel pressure gauge from your local auto parts store. You "buy" it, in the form of a deposit, but, get your money back when you return it.

While I wanted to rent one to check my pressure. They wanted $140 cash deposit .... Amazon sells them $25 and up .... think for around $35 I own a gauge good enough for home garage use.

That is pretty steep. I think I paid 40 bucks for mine, and I got one with a longer hose..... I could screw it onto the fitting on the fuel rail, and tape it to the windshield of my Firebird.... Same for the truck.

It's been a while since I bought a pressure test kit but I think it was around $50-60! I got one that works with most fuel injections systems back the the 1980's when they started coming in up to today.

I bought this one for $30.99 from Amazon

Just a basic home owner quality gauge and it works. ... They have some for $20 and a few better ones with longer hoses for $70 .... this one works for what I need.

I got a similar for from Summit. A few more pieces but it covers all the vehicles I'll ever work on.
