Remove the valve body, You will probably see what the problem is. How are your abilities? There are videos and publications on rebuilds.

 

2100 isn't bad for a rebuild these days...... But, keep in mind, they aren't including any hard parts in that quote.... and that metal had to come from somewhere..... If you have the place, the time, the tools, and the willingness, several members here have rebuilt their own trans, having never been in one before. The only real problem is that 800 inch/pound spring in the O/D unit. Need a press for that.

 

Here is a 6 ton A-Frame press, $60 from Amazon, for the OD springs and the many small projects you wished you had a press for. There are many different businesses that sell rebuild kits from $150-$1000. At least, I would put in upgraded/performance frictions and steels, Raybestos GPZ or Alto Reds for the frictions. The kit I bought for the 46re was on the high end of price and upgrades without getting into the bigger hard parts. A Zip Kit from Sonnax for the shift kit. The Sonnax kit SC-46/47RHE, Sure Cure Kit, has been discontinued and replaced by Sonnax Zip Kit 46-47RHE-ZIP. Right from their website. I also find rebuilding an automatic is a lot easier than rebuilding an engine.

 

Thank you all for the replies and I really do appreciate the idea to rebuild it myself, but after thinking about it I need something that’s going to be “semi-reliable”. Haha as reliable as an almost 30 year old truck can be. Anyway thanks a lot for the replies and I believe the shop said any hard parts would total about 2600 total.

 

Ask and find out what they are putting in it. It's contaminated so a new converter is mandatory. You may be able to buy the parts for the rebuild, It will save on the cost and you know what's going in it. May opt for some upgrades also like Sonnax parts.

 

Even watch if you have another shop rebuild, NOT reconditioned. It will give you a little bit of understanding what they do so you dont get Hosed.
