Default 1998 dodge Ram grinding in all but park.

Hey guys just joined the forum and a first time dodge owner.

Picked up a 1998 Ram 1500 5.2 4x4. Believe it’s a 46re? Anyway picked it up because it was a very good price. It has no forward or reverse gears. It seems like it wants to go into gear and makes a loud grinding/while noise if put in gear.

Have yet to drop the pan but was wondering what you guys might think it could be just off the top of your head?

Is the transfer case fully shifted? Might try putting it in 4x4, then back to 2wd, see if anything changes.

Welcome to DF!

I tried shifting from 4wd to 2wd and stuff but no change, I should have included in the original post that the previous owner says that it started out being hard to go into reverse and then lost reverse and shortly after lost all gears.

Time to drop the pan, and see what kind of carnage you have in there......

Hey guys messed around with it today, was able to get reverse working, but still no forward gears. Planning to drop pan tomorrow. I’ll let you know what I find.

Let me see if I can post the video of the sound it makes it’s an awful grinding. I won’t lie I haven’t checked the fluid yet, I just bought it yesterday. Grinds in everything but park. Does have reverse now though.

Dropped the pan this is what I find, lots of metal. Local shop is asking 2100 for a complete overhaul with labor included. Is that a fair price?
