Default 42RH to 46RH

I got a 3.9L v6 ram 1500 with an 42RH and the transmission went out recently. I can get my hands on a 46RH but wanted to see if it’ll be straight forward to swap. Will it make my truck run any different?

Bolt right in, hook right up, work just fine. It's a stronger trans than the 42, that's the only difference. Although, YEAR of manufacture makes a difference, as does number of drive wheels.

Would it work if I got a 4x4 one? It’s from a 1995 5.2. Any way it’ll work with just taking off transfer case?

Doesn't work, 2wd version has a longer output shaft.

The 42RH internal components are lighter weight than those of the 46RH, since the 42RH was designed to support the horsepower/torque level output of your engine. If it were me, I'd try to stay with the 42RH behind your 3.9 V-6 engine...

What part of the country are you in? Should be plenty of them left out there, as you can find them in several other vehicles that came with the 3.9 V-6 (Ram, Dakota, etc.). Several earlier models had them, as they were phased out in 1996. Check car-part.com
