I bought my grandfathers 2001 dodge 2500 5.9 gasser a few weeks ago and have noticed a problem with it. At 105k miles, It has a ticking noise. its a somewhat rapid tick. It only happens when I'm on the gas and in drive. I typically start to hear it around 1500 rpms. As soon as I let off the gas, the noise stops. I can rev to 3000 rpms in park and I dont hear it. Only when I'm on the gas. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, please let me know!

 

Do you have to be moving for it to make the noise? I would suspect an exhaust leak first.

 

Yeah it only makes it when im driving. Never in park. I have an o2 sensor code and an evap code. Would that possibly mean exhaust leak? Im like brand new to mechanics and learning so bare with me.

 

I can't hear the noise but it's probably detonation. Does it do it when you first take off when the motor is cold?

 

it does it any time im on the gas. Hot or cold.
