Default Motor Swap from 318 to 360

My 318 overheated and cracked found a motor the guy told me it was a 318 it was a 360. Put it in the truck and the starter is hitting the edge of the flywheel instead of the teeth so it’s not starting. I was also told I would have to change the computer for it to run correctly today. I was wondering if anybody could steer me in the right direction so u can get this truck running.

Lots of possible variables here and more details are needed. What year and model truck are you working on? Is the transmission manual or automatic? Is the 360 a 5.9 magnum fuel injected motor? If so, what year is the motor?

mine is a 1995. Idk what year the motor came from but it’s a gen2. Yes fuel injected 360. Both are magnum automatic transmission. I was tryin to upload a video of what I’m talking about but it keeps saying it’s to large. Trying to figure out how to edit it but I’m kinda dumb.

best when uploading here for me anyway is to have a youtube account and upload the video as a private link only video, then post the link.

I just want to clarify terminology, the automatic would not have a flywheel just the ring gear on the torque converter. If you have the engine installed and all sensors connected it must be a very similar year motor, or you changed sensors, which is fine. The hardware is very similar through all the years.

I have never held one up to the other to clarify the exact difference but the 318 and 360 use a different flexplate/torque converter setup due to balance weights. They are not direct swap interchangeable. If you are still using the 318 hardware with the 360 this could be your issue. If you are using a 360 motor you need a flexplate/torque converter for a 360

The 5.2 is internally balanced, the 5.9 is externally balanced. Up thru 95, the balance weights were on the torque converter, 96 and up, the weights were on the flexplate. Really need to figger out what year the motor is.....

Did the motor come with a flexplate??

it did and the flex plate is weighted. I have the transmission that was on the 360 but it only had 1st and reverse. Think the torque converter would be ok to swap with the transmission in the truck?

If it had the weights on the flexplate, you can run your original torque converter, it will be neutral balance as well. So, good to go there.
