I won the last contest so I guess there is a time limit before I can be eligible again. I have two scanners now so I'll stay out of this one. Hopefully it will help someone who needs it.
My two biggest problems couldn't be diagnosed with a scanner. One of them never happened again and still remains a mystery what caused it.
Bought my 1500 from a good friend. I drove the 30 miles home with no problems. Brought it over for a smog check. When I'm pulling out of their driveway my transmission took a crap. Drove it home in 2nd gear about 1/4 mile to my house. It had 85K. 2 of the gears had burnt frictions and steels. I rebuilt the tranny, with a valve body rebuild also. I put a new harness for the electronics. I spent the better part of 3-4 weeks trying to fix, it wouldnt shift. I put in new electronics, still no go, litteraly. It was a bent pin in the new harness. Made the pin straight and been working since. The reason for the valve body rebuild. When I took the pan off, 1 screw of the valve body was 1/2 inch out and 3 other screws were loose. This is the only thing I found wrong. It was leaking oil through this small gap under pressure. Inside while tearing down, the Torrington (flat) bearing had rough rollers in it and quickly on it's way out. I was the first person to open the oil pan.
I had a 2004 Ford Expedition with the 5.4 engine. I had electrical issues nearly from the day I got it. I would drive down the road and the gauges would go through self test repeatedly. Eventually, it wouldn't start at all. I used my scanners and sometimes would get trouble codes and sometimes it would not communicate. The previous technician had worked on the main power cable to the alternator but did a poor job. The end had come off at the alternator and going down the road, it would cut in and out. After fixing that, it would sometimes start and when I pulled the smart junction box (fuse box but more) it had partially melted. I pulled a junk yard part with a good housing and sent both off to be rebuilt.
When I got it back, the truck ran, a bit. Eventually, it wouldn't communicate with the scanner. The only part left was the computer so I sent it off to be serviced. It was returned as unserviceable. I found a place to program a new computer and installed it. Once I cut the new keys for the car, it fired right up. I drove the truck for over a year and several thousand miles with no issues after that. No telling how much longer it would have taken me without the scanners I used.

I had a Jeep XJ 4.0 Renix, which had a intermittent issue of shudder. At first it started at 80-100 km/h speed, and very randomly. But it started to get worse over course of few weeks. When I went to work on morning, it worked just fine. But when I went back to home, and speed got over 60 km/h, it started to shake and shudder. I figured it lost a cylinder.
Measured all the wiring and stuff, nothing, all seemed to be fine. Eventually it got so bad that I just revved the engine and it started to act up.
I then thought about the whole situation, and realized that every time it started to shudder, sun was shining and was really warm. So I figured it would have to be related to heat. Black vehicle, ECM on next to a gas pedal under the dash. So it gets hot in there while driving.
So, since I could get the symptoms just by revving the engine, I removed ECM from the bracket and placed it on the plastic tray. Took some ice on bag and placed next to ECM and vóila, it started to run perfectly. Got a used ECM, replaced, never had issues again.
1995 I had bought a 77 Volare from a auto auction in Oregon for $125 after installing a 4 BBl , Stage 2 shift Kit Broke the Torque converter (Ears) Somehow on I-5 S in Wa State dumped fluid everywhere had to pull tranny and replace pump seal and Converter on side of road, I got lucky as I ordered a 2500 stall converter just recently(Prior to incident in 1995) and it just happened to arrive where I was staying in Portland Oregon (about 20 miles away and had friends that brought tools oil and converter to me then gave me a hard time as I replaced it Good friends and now looking back was not so bad of a time either ( though was 25 not 55 so much easier to do that kind of work LOL
