AC heater making truck shut off

Default AC heater making truck shut off

I have a 1998 Dodge Ram 1500, 5.2L 4x4. ANytime I turn my trucks air or heater on the turck will shut off by itself. Any ideas?

is the a/c compressor seized?

Yes, it is. Is it an overload on the power? That is what i was reading. I just wanted to double check before I spend money on parts. I'm guessing I will have to replace it? I wasn't sure since it was doing it whether it was heat or a/c.

Pull the serpentine belt and see if the truck still shuts off.

Either that, or simply disconnect the compressor clutch....... (electrical)

Yep just unplug the single wire to the ac clutch then at least you can flip through climate controls without fear of stalling or roasting the belt.

I unplugged the ac compressor and the truck worked just fine. Looks like I need to replace the a/c compressor. Thanks for the replies everybody.

You can leave it unplugged indefinitely. Obviously you won't have a/c but it does not affect anything else incl the heater
