Default Transmission grinding noise

I've got a 97 dodge ram 1500 5.2 and a few months ago the transmisson started making this noise in reverse and jumps in and out of gear in drive, can anyone listen to this video and identify the possible causes of the noise.

Not a good sign..... You could try changing the filter and fluid...... but, I suspect your trans is not long for this world.

I just finished rebuilding my transmission, and it sounds like you're going to be looking at a rebuild soon. There is an excellent walk through out there on YouTube from transmission bench, just search them in YouTube. This was my first transmission rebuild in over 20 years and that tutorial made it incredibly easy. There is a snap ring inside the transmission that is notorious for breaking into pieces, there are also a couple springs that are prone to failure and will break. That snap ring though, that's what typically causes issues with reverse and first gear. Like
HeyYou said, a filter and fluid change might buy you some time, but I have a feeling you're on borrowed time.
