Default Fuel Pump

I have a 96 Dodge Ram 2500 V10, and going to change out the fuel pump. It isn't giving me any problems, but due to age and miles, I'm thinking it would be proactive to get a new fuel pump before it leaves me dead in the water on the road.

What I have found, there are 2 pumps, one with 4 pins and the other with 6 pins, electrical connectors. In a search for this I found on Ram Forumz for a 96 Ram 4x4 5.9 v8, which has the same pump << It is a 4 pin. You have pump power, sender unit power, ground, sender unit signal out. The newer ones are 6 pin because they have fuel pressure sender and a low fuel warning light, and the sensor for that is in the tank.>>.

I have never noticed a light for fuel pressure, but have seen the low fuel light come on. So would this make my fuel pump have the 6 pin electrical connector? Or is there a date for early and late production for 4 pins and 6 pins?

If nothing else I intend to buy both Precision Fuel Sending Unit/Assembly from O'Reilly, 4 pins, and the 6 pins, then take the one that doesn't fit back.

Looking for input on this thread.

Nope. 4 pin. The low fuel light is a product of gauge position, not a signal from anywhere else. And on the 2nd gens, the PCM simply didn't care about fuel pressure. If pressure was low, you might see a lean condition code, or, it may just stop running altogether. Go with a GOOD quality pump though. Buy once, cry once. Also, if you have the 34 gallon tank, get it as empty as possible before you drop it..... or, raise the bed instead.....

Is the Precision Fuel Sending Unit/Assembly (pump) a good pump? It comes with a lifetime warranty. If not a good pump, what is?

Delphi...... A 'lifetime warranty' doesn't help much if you end up having it fail every few months......

A Delphi medium duty is $293 at O'Rielly, Amazon, and Parts Geek. Only at Parts Geek do they offer an extended warranty for 3 years for an additional $45 offered by Power Extend, total of $339 plus taxes. At Parts Geek, the description says it is premium duty, but at Amazon, it says medium duty with the same part number FG0212. I looked on eBay for the same part number and found that the manufacturer has a 2 year warranty, whereas Amazon and O'Reilly doesn't say what the warranty is.

Do you have any information on the warranty of this fuel pump from Delphi? I sure appreciate your feedback to me.

Check out RockAuto.com for that pump. Lifetime warranty for a regular inventory Delphi fuel pump for $171.79 plus shipping...

I jumped on that one. I don't understand why the warranties are different site to site. That regular inventory pump is a premium pump, just what I was looking for. Thank you AtomicDog.

BTW, I'm having a local mechanic install the pump, and the fuel tank will have less than a 1/4 tank of fuel in it.

Precision is sketchy. I know OP already made a choice, but caveat emptor. O'Reilly simply contracts with *whoever* for the Precision badged stuff. Usually not great quality.

"Caveat Emptor" are the words for sourcing auto parts these days. Finding quality parts to keep from having to perform a repair job twice is really a chore these days, especially with electrical parts...
