01 ram 1500 trans temp sensor issues
hello i’m trying to get my newly acquired 01 ram running. it has a check engine light on with these two codes a P0711 and a P1391. i had it at a shop an they told me that the trans temp sensor the P0711 code is what’s causing the other code and what’s causing my running issues has anyone dealt with there trans temp sensor doing causing this issue before ? The shop also told me that it was just cheaper to remove and swap the trans Then to replace the sensor. now besides being expensive is it really that bad to do or is it just like i think. Now i know since the sensor is in the valve body ill have to drop the pan and change fluid and filters. but it should be a pretty straight forward swap no ? has anyone changed the sensor them selves before. did you have to do anything crazy once you swapped it. or am i just over thinking it. and beside someone asks yes i am mechanically inclined i am a diesel mechanic at a PeterBilt dealership
what running issues are you having
second, no unless there's just a plain sensor supply issue the codes are not connected. Im showing trans temp and cmp/ckp signal loss. I don't have an actual circuit diagram to compare if those sensors share a supply line, but i would doubt it. You would need to verify the cause of the code, could be a faulty crank or cam position sensor, possibly a faulty PCM, possible wiring. Also I dont think replacing the transmission is cheaper then replacing the sensor, but I have not done one, less stupid things have surprised me in the past.... id honestly think its a slim chance the sensor is even bad, I would look over wiring really closely.

You can download the factory service manual for your truck from here.
The sensor in the trans is a few bucks. I would be tempted to change the governor pressure solenoid while you were in there, and change the filter, and adjust the bands as well.
Unless there is some damage to the wiring harnesses, the codes are not related.

The shop just doesn't want to get into the trans at all. If the trans is known good, this is absurd. Any rebuild you get is at best equal to a known good used trans.
The shop also seems to believe trans codes can affect how the engine runs, which isn't true on this older stuff.
Gently ask them to chase the CKP/CMP and then find a different shop. Or since you're mechanically inclined, you can replace one or both. Use quality sensors, not parts store house brands.
What "running issues" are you experiencing?
