Default 1996 Ram 1500 4x4 issues front axles don’t always engage

New to the forum and hoping you guys could help with my issue. As stated in the title when I try to use either 4hi or low I get the 4wd light but only part of the time do the front axles engage. Sometimes I can just keep shifting back and forth and finally get them to spin. No weird noises or anything coming from the front. Any insight would be greatly appreciated

If the light comes on, that implies the actuator is actually moving..... maybe the fork is bunged up, or a snapring fell off.... Have to pull the cad, and have a look. Be warned, those bolts like to break off, instead of break loose......

Alright thank you for the reply. You are talking about the actuator and housing when you say the CAD?

sorry for the double reply but if a snap ring fell of that just means the fork has moved to far on the rod correct? Or if the fork is messed up is that something that can be bought aftermarket? Is there any way it could be the sleeve that slides over?

Thank you, I’m thinking when I can get to work on it that I might just slide the collar down and move the fork over to lock it in place. Would there be any issues to leave it locked in?

First step I do anytime I buy a CAD vehicle in this generation. I rely on 4wd to much to have it fail when i need it. Pure Diesel Power sells a 1 piece axle shaft replacement also.

Make sure you front driveshaft is in great condition and keep it greased or you could cause damage to your transfer case, Dodge ran full time front axles from 02-12 model years, besides IFS models, im not sure how they worked

Thank you again. I will look into that! This isn’t my daily I usually use it in the winter or any 4x4 stuff that needs done so I will just lock it when I get the chance. Also I can’t find a gasket for the CAD housing can I just use RTV and if so which color?

There is also the posi-lock cable which allows manual control of the CAD, I have never had or used one, I read mixed reviews on its quality and reliability. Any RTV would be fine, I only use black on anything not related to extreme heat

Yeah I’ve had a posi lok on a 1998 blazer I had it worked well but it was just a straight pull of the actuator not pulling a fork over. And currently as well as this dodge my 4x4 s10 is having vacuum issues with the 4x4 so I’m waiting on a knock off posi lok for it 😂 the winter storm kicked my trucks’ ***
but thanks for the RTV recommendation and all of the suggestions
