you can check your codes through the trucks CEL by turning your key on off on off on off on. then it will flash the codes up
Just went out and tried that. Sweet!! I never knew that!
That's good and bad. Good, you get a general idea, bad, in that I had a code for a Cylinder Misfire. A code reader is needed to pinpoint the problem cylinder(s).

Always nice to know you can read the codes yourself. My Grand Am which I traded for my Dodge had a check engine light come on and it ended up being a loose gas cap. Nice!! I had to make an appointment and lose my car for an hour just because my gas cap wasn't tightened correct. At least they didn't charge me.

I believe the 98 is the only year you couldnt check it. Because that was the first year they had a digital odometer. The 99 and up will display the code on the odometer. the 97 and lower will flash the check engine light or something.

All of the parts stores that used to read codes for nothing around here either dont read them anymore or they charge. The local shops were complaining because it was a loss of revenue because they charge like $50 a scan.
So I bought one for $130 and gave my number to a couple parts stores to give out to people that want code read. I charge $20 bucks a scan and I meet them somewhere real close to my house

thanks.. ive found out the same thing too ive done a bunch of reserch lol untill 98 they had to give the owner acces to the codes without a code reader so in 98 dodge disabled it however i guess a bunch of pepole complained and they broght it back in early 99 so us 98 'ers and some early 99's got screwed out ot that option lol just gave me an exuse to buy a superchip lol
