Broke Open My Engine -- Updated 9/3/2006

I'm sorry. I must have my transmissions confused. I believe the gas engine is mated to the 46RE, as you stated. I'm trying to find someplace I can get the rebuild kit and shift kits, but I'm coming up dry.
BTW - the tiny dude response
No worries. I can scramble around in that engine bay with no problems. Sometimes it pays to be svelt
Well, damn. I just called a local shop today and they said Magnum heads are prone to cracking like you all stated. I'm going to pull the heads and have them checked, but I'm debating on whether I should get the replacement Magnums (with the hardened seats) or if I should go with RT heads. I use the truck occasionally, so I don't see the added expense of R/T heads if they are $800 for a pair.

42RE? aint it a 46RE?
if your doing headwork yourself.. look at some RR's free up some hp and mpg and are more durable then the stock steel stamped ones
did you decided to pull the motor or doing the work in the engine bay? assuming engine bay b/c your a tiny dude (no offense)
while your rebuilding that tranny get you a transgo shift kit,,, itll improve shifting and prolong the life on the tranny
goodluck with all those projects!

here are a couple of sources for the tranny stuff...

R/T's are $1250 bolt on ready... you could get bare castings and build them yourself cheeper (maybe)
tani im doing the same thing..ripping apart the top end..
i think steve has pics of how he "polished" the injector and plenum ports... looks good to me
ive heard good things from the aps guys for the tranny issues...
and there was a thread about the ramzilla trannys,,,that was the first time i heard about them..i cant find that trhead but if you search alitte bit you could prolly find it... the fella that got his tranny done with a ramzilla tranny said nothing but great things about it..

Tore further into my engine and was not happy at what I found. First, I remove the fuel rail assy from the intake and found loads of dirt inside both of the fuel rail and a few of the injectors on the driver's side bank. I think someone removed it in the past and didn't replace the O-rings on top of the injectors.

Here is the passenger side bank with the head removed:

And here is the driver's side bank with the head removed:

Here is what the heads look like. This one is the driver's side head. I think I'm going to just bite the bullet and tear the engine down to the block. IIRC, cylinder walls are not supposed to have rust on them, and pistons should not be black. Even though I have the Haynes, which details the engine building procedure, can anyone recommend a good book for engine rebuilding? I have decided that I want to go with roller rockers for now, but other than that I want to stay stock. It will be interesting to see how the heads pan out.
