Broke Open My Engine -- Updated 9/3/2006
After some on again/off again work, I got the block pulled out yesterday and began the teardown. The cam lobes and the lifters really don't look that bad, but I think I will replace them anyway as long as I am in there. As was seen in the previous pictures, the pistons have a lot of carbon buildup on the tops. I popped out seven of the core plugs, and there was a ton of solid junk, gunk inside of the cooling jackets. I can't believe that when I had it flushed that nothing came out. The bottom end smells like burnt oil, and there's some crusty gunk around the oil pump. Here are a few shots of the bottom end. I am hoping to get the block to a machine shop within the next two weeks. My only concern is to clean the block, hone the cylinders, clean the pistons/rods, use larger rings, and then start the rebuild process.

when i was doing my 360 build i used a machine shop that is local here. . . .they had great prices on everything. locally reman'd head for 400 a pair (theres a core). when i got mine just so happened they were r/t's

what motor oil did you use in there and for how long (# of miles since you owned it).

Anyway, I am thinking of using a synthetic blend after the rebuild. Nothing wrong with synthetics no matter what anyone tells me. No detergent oils.............................
I was just curious to find out what oil was used to let it get in that bad of a shape. the synthetics have always done me good. never had any internal engine failures since switching 15 years ago. Mobil 1...!
Well, I was able to stay standard on the mains and the cam bearings. The cam checked out good, the crank is good, pistons are good -- ALL GOOD!! I brought the block home Friday in a borrowed truck and started in on building it today. The engine shop was short on supplies for the heads, so all I could do today was the bottom end. Since they didn't have my new water pump I used the old one to get the cover plate aligned and sealed into place. I should have my heads Tuesday afternoon so I can continue the buildup. I am screwed now, because I tried cutting down the intake runners and hit the area where the valley plate goes. I am hella pissed and have decided that cutting down the runners isn't worth it. Not to mention all of the materials I broke (collets, sawzall blades) trying to just get a start.
Anyway, enjoy the first batch of pictures.

Here's a shot of what it looked like when I brought it home. That little diesel Rabbit is a blast to drive.
