Default Engine Shut off will not start.

I was driving my 97 1500 Ram 5.2 up a fairly steep highway when all of a sudden it lost all power and shut off. It will not start back. Just wondering where I need to start looking. The engine will turn over just will not crank. Thanks.

welcome to DF...

check your fuel pump. turn the key on and listen for the pump to turn on for about 2 seconds. no sound, need a new pump. other possiblities include crank sensor and cam sensors. the motors basic needs are air fuel & spark so one of those is not there. look for something that is going to affect all 8 cylinders... meaning it's not a wire issue and is most likely not a cap/rotor issue.

good luck and hit us up if you have any other questions...

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking fuel pump as well after I got the truck to run a few seconds by putting some gas straight to the the throttle body. Am I right in thinking the pump is in the fuel tank? Thanks.

Check that cat out too. Mine did that when I was on the highway. Stalled out and had a hell of a time starting and when it did start, giving it any throttle killed it.

Wanted to let Steve00ram360 know because of his assistance I got my truck back on the road today. I really appreciate your help and let you know I could not have done it without you. I am new to this forum, but with folks like Steve here it has got to be top notch! Thanks again.

Glad to hear it's on the road again...

So it was the fuel pump? how long did it take you to swap it?

By the time I ran to get the new pump it was between 2-3 hours. Your directions were spot-on. Thanks again.
