BURT VALVE OR CRACKED HEAD??
Hi everybody. This is my first post so bare with me. I've got a 99 Ram with 5.9, it keeps throwing a P0304 #4 misfire code. I do notice when the truck is at idle and when slowly letting off the brakes the truck acts like it chuggs and shakes the truck. I've changed plugs, wires, distributor, rotor, intake gaskets, and also switched the injectors on 2 and 4 to see if made a difference, but still nothing. The truck does seem to smooth out when the rpms climb. Any suggestions would be great.
You might want to do a compression check. It's pretty simple to do, and will help to either ease your mind or come up with a plan on what to do next. I have read numerous posts here and elsewhere about the stock heads cracking, and am fully prepared to order a new set when the time comes. As a matter of fact if I had to do any work at all on them, I think I would just pitch them in favor of a new set. To me the heads and the intake are the two major problems with these trucks ( please note: IMO "major" problems take more than three hours to fix and most often involve expensive parts that you have to wait for) and you already have one of them fixed
Well, I got the heads off last nigh and found that the right side had a crack and the left had some burnt valves. So I got some remans coming from the stealership for great deal. Hope to have it back on the road before the weekend. This is a little frustrating cause I've only had the truck for two weeks.
I can understand if you are on a budget to get reman heads, but when I did mine, I got brand new aftermarket OEM replacements. Not remanufactured. If I knew then what I know now, I would have gone to the R/T heads instead. The aftermarket OEM ones are great, but I would have wanted more power that that R/T's would give me.

www.moparts.com has everything, maybe ask steve where he got his though
I got mine from moparts...
Hughs has a new set of heavy duty's that out flow the R/T's and are cheeper ($8-900 bux)
for anyone with head problems... my suggestion is if your on a budget, get the bare castings and build them up using stock parts. Most of the aftermarket stuff for heads is overkill in my opinion. Unless your drag racing your truck, you probably can live w/o the hi-po goodies in the heads.
