nice truck...

a 180 deg t-stat will lower the head temp which will lower your intake air charge. the lower the intake charge temp, the more power you'll make.

im about to do a test to see if the t-stat has any relation to worse milieage... as far as i understand the computer moniters the eng temp .. and its preprogramed to 196 degs. so in theroy if you throw a 180 deg tstat in there the computer will think that the engine is never warmed up...when the computer thinkgs the engine needs to be warmer it lets the injectors stay open for a little longer makin your milieage worse... either that or my PCM rode the short bus to school and has a learning disability... the pcm is saposed to relaern the normal op temp after a few hundred miles.... 1000 miles later my mileage hasnt gotten better

Thanks for the info, I just saw a few posts talking about lower temp thermostats and I didnt know the reason. I do have plenty of power and also a hypertech is on the way, should have it in a few days and we will see how it does.

Well from what people have told me, if you change to a lower t-stat, you will make you engine run cooler which means a little more power. But(there is always a but lol), you won't have the same heat that you usually had, like it won't get as hot as heat as it did, so you will be a little cooler. But if I am wrong, someone correct me because that is just what I had heard.

I don't believe your truck will run in loop mode with a 180* stat, If i understand the concept correctly, the changeover occurs at like 177*. I added the 180* to mine and I am still getting 8mpg thats where I was with the 197*. I have seen a writeup somewhere about how the computer detects this and I will try and locate it.

it is worth it! the small amount lost in fuel milage will not compare to the slight bump in power. plus it'll just run better in my opinion...
