Default electrical stuff....

so im tryin to figure out more about off roading lights.
thanx for any input
i'm lookin at a site right now (www.4wheelcustoms.com) and it has some nice lights. the pro-comp lights that im looking at, however, you have to buy the switch seperately (only about 10-14 bucks). but they have two options for the light switches- "Pro Comp Light Switch Kit single mini for 2 lights" and the other option is "Pro Comp Single Heavy Duty Switch Kit w/relay for 2 lights"

what does the heavy duty mean? the lights i want are 100 watt if that affects it.

I'd get the HD one with the relay. 200W is alot and a relay is gonna be safest.

You sure the lights don't come with the kit? My KC's came with the complete wiring kit, switch, relay, 2 in-line fuses, everything.

yea im pretty sure..... nowhere in the light description does it say includes switch, and in the picture of the 'kit' its just lights, no switches, and on that same website by the same company is switches. so im pretty sure. but ill be sure to double check if i end up ordering them.

Definately use the relay. get the relay power straight off the battery. Without it you will burn/melt the switch....

Yeah for sure, email the people, or Pro Comp with the part number and see if it comes with the wiring. KC sells the wiring seperate too, so just because they sell it seperate doesn't mean the kit doesn;t come with it

What kind of lights are they? Round or Rectangular? Fog, Driving, Long Range? And both are 100W you said? I'm just curious what kind your looking at

Long rangers, cool, thats what I have and holy crap! Mine are 375,000 candle power each and they shine like 1/2 a mile! I'd ask what candle power those are too since it doesn't say. Also it says "The wiring is protected by flexible metal conduit." which leads me to beleive it does come with the wiring

using relays is always a good thing... more wiring and can be comewhat complicated but not hard to figure out.. a relay is a switch that can handle more power then any type of light (light as in not heavy) duty switch you can get at autozone.... relay is an electrically activated switch... has open contacts and requires a switched 12V signal to activate... pretty much having a switch controlling another switch

yes deff use a relay, if your using a relay you can use any switch you want it only takes an 1 amp to switch a relay here is a diagram on how to do it, oh BTW i install those lights all the time they look pritty sweet but if you get them there will be 5 little bilts in holding the socket on the bottem of the light, take those screws out and locktight them they have a tendency to be loose fron the factory and vibrate out over time

here is a wireing diagram as well on how to use the relay

as a jeep guy i know that pro-comp light do not come with a wiring kit. They only have the 2 wires coming from the housing protected by a metal wire loom (conduit, if you will)
you will need a pretty big honkin relay to put all four on there. if i were you i would use two seperate replays from the auto parts store to keep cost down and add redundancy.

For example, if one replay fries, you still have your 2 other long distance lights available for use.

You can also pick up pre terminated wiring kits all day at pep-boys or auto zone. I wouldnt use one of those though. i would use some pretty heave guage wiring. prob 10 guage to be safe.

just a heads up
Chris
