Hi, just getting ready to change the shocks. I borrowed a hydraulic floor jack from a friend it is rated to 2 1/4 tons. According to my SMOG test report my truck weights 4750. Should I not use the jack. My only other choice is the one that comes with the truck.

 

the whole truck isnt going to be resting on the single floor jack..only a percentage will be...

either way 4500LBS capacity floor jack and a 4700lb truck... youll be fine! even using the jack to lift up an entire end of the truck like the rear end under the diff cover... just sue jack stands as a precautionary

 

You can use the jack... Remember, your only jacking one part of the truck up. The opposite end that is sitting on the ground acts as a lever. You wont be lifting all 4500 LBS of truck, just like 2000 LB's. When you lift it up the center of gravity will shift and go towards the rear (or front) more.

 

Okay thanks a lot for the help. So according to the first reply, I should for the front shock, jack it up under that metal part up front and for the rear under the differential? This really has helped me.

 

i dont think you even need to jack anything up. i cant see why. the shock arnt holding the axle in place. just unbolt them and take them out. theres at least 3 inches of down travel in each shock anyway.

 

oh damn.. lol your right...shocks dont hold up anything .. doh!!!!! you can compress and extend a shock with your hands.. lol
