Default Fuel Level

Seems that everytime the fuel level drops below 1/2 the indicator just bounces around empty. If you accelerate it drops below empty and when you stop it rises above a 1/4 then settles back to E.
I had driven only 62 miles on what we thought was a full tank when it started doing this. When I filled it back up it took only 9 gallons to be up in the filler neck. Would this 96 have a 20 gal tank?
Is this just an indication of a bad sending unit? If so, and as complicated as it appears to get the tank down and the pump, sending, filter out, is there an after-market fuel indication system I can get? As well, are there external pump and filter kits I can get?

Your truck has a 26 gallon tank. Your problem sounds like a bad float. Maybe it was damaged and got a hole in it which fills up with gas. Its really not that hard to drop the tank and change the fuel pump. Just run in as low as you can, then remove the filler neck from the tank and unbolt the 2 straps.

thanks for that
yeah, it was sounding like it was going to be a real hassel (according to many of the posts Iv read). Any idea as to how much a replacement sending would be and where I can get one?

check a junk yard those are things that usually will still be good in the event of an accident. it might have been drained of fuel so i'd get some and let it soak for awhile and freshen it up.

yeah the gas gauges are really inaccurate on the rams. even my 2001. it sits at completely full forever then drops like a rock once i get down past three quarters.

[edit] forgot to mention that external pumps don't exist for the stock tank. you could probably do some fab work and make one yourself, but that seems like more work than it's worth. just my 2 pennys.

Motorcycle or ATV jack works great to lower and raise your tank.

I was able to do mine with ease... just used the floor jack and some 2x6's to stabilize the NEAR empty tank.

there is a DIY writeup in the DIY forum that may help.
