I've already replace spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor, air filter, pcv valve and catalytic converter.
I already ordered a hypertech programmer.
I also plan on getting a cat back exhaust, cold air intake, new o2 sensors, new fuel filter.
I will also check vacuum with a vacuum gauge while driving, fuel pressure while driving.
I will also replace the intake plenum gasket.
After doing all that if I don't get at least 17 mpg I will sell it and get a Chevy.
My stinking 95 Chevy pickup with a 305 V8 with 160 horsepower and 180,000 miles had more low end torque on the highway (with 3.08 gears!) and got 17 mpg.
I've driven 1998 and 2001 Chevy's and they will blow this Dodge away as far as acceleration is concerned and still get significantly better mileage.

I usually go by the overhead computer, but I have also figured it out on my own several times to verify the computer's results. Every time, the computer has been dead on. Don't really know why I get such good mileage on the highway.

Any TSB's regarding the pcm prior to 2001 are on your truck if you have a 2001. I got real lucky-NOT. I have a 2000. It seems that half way through that production year is when the factory started putting the death flash on the pcm instead of reliable plenums/gaskets. At the same time they decided to put torque management on the pcm instead of fixing thier slushbucket transmissions. When was mine built? THE SECOND HALF. I was told by a Dodge mechanic that they stopped the death flash after they started putting the metal gaskets in. I'm not sure when that was.

ORT, How fast do you drive on the highway to achieve these numbers - and how many rpm's are you turning at 70mph? I'm curious because it seems like mine gets BETTER mileage between 75-80mph than it does anywhere between 60-75 mph.......

Hey guys,
I think the 5.2 is just a gas hog in general....but then again we buy dodge because we like em, not because of the mileage. With a brand new long block 5.2 (which Dodge paid for..thank god) I'm still getting 12.8-13.6 depending on the wind conditions and my driving habits. My truck miles are 95% highway miles right now. I still have my Dakota with the 4.7 and with that I was only getting 14-16 depending on my foot. Bottom line, Dodge has never been know for good mileage, but we still have better looks and bigger ***** then all the rest!!!! Talk to you all later!!!

I'm getting about 9.9 lately. I just put the tonneu back on, so that will help a bit. I actually haven't driven it lately b/c the dash is about half torn out right now. My bro-in-laws 01 CTD get better milage than mine with the bed filled to the top and towing 6000 lbs. than mine gets nearly empty!!

Well I installed the 87 octane hypertech program last night.
It seemed to make a big difference in low end torque, except last night when it was 80 degrees outside the valves were making a lot of noise going up hills.
I think I may have the intake plenum gasket problem.
I ordered a 180 degree thermostat so maybe that will help.
When I drove to work this morning (50 degrees outside) I had no valve noise and the low end torque going up hills was better than ever and I hardly had to push the gas pedal down to maintain speed.
It seemed to make a big difference in low end torque, except last night when it was 80 degrees outside the valves were making a lot of noise going up hills.
