what makes the K&N System so much better than S&B's kit?

I dont have the link but the member, zeek i think is his name, has a nice site where he posts his mods and he has a write up on the fipk, it really changed my mind about it

Here is zeek's site Click Project Ram. You will have to go through the pages but I don't think you will mind. As far as the sound I think it's like a big old 4-barrel carb. Deep and awesome growl. SWEET!!

That was informative, pretty much sealed the deal, I have to get one

I would need to look for Generation II correct? And something I've been thinking about, is the reason for more air flow (aside from the better air intake design compared to stock) because of a larger-pored air filter that will let more than normal particles get into the engine, or is just because of the design?

yes generation II is what you need to buy. I have never seen a generation I anywhere so it wont be hard to find.

I've looked at dyno charts and have read that its about +11hp at like 4200rpm. The only time my truck goes over 2000 rpm is while shifting to like 2nd gear or so. I'm always pretty much in the 1500 rpm range, will I still benefit from the kit?

yes, your motor will still have more air (and cleaner air) sucked into the motor so it will not have to work as hard as it would with the stock ram air junk to breathe. Think of it this way, how hard is it for you to run with your mouth closed? probably fairly difficult. It's the same concept in that the motor will just have more air to utilize and wont have to work AS hard. Now i'm looking for a good set of headers and a nice cat back system so my motor can breathe that air out easier as well. If you dont ever run high rpm's i take it your truck is not being built for power or to run hard, so why would the power gain be that big of a deal for you? Now if you wanted to build your truck to get some juice out if the motor this intake is a good starting point.

First of all- sorry shott. I have the same Eddelbrock shorties that you've had problems with. I live in the South where they don't often salt the roads. The headers look exactly like they did when I put them on. They do, however, put off alot of heat. Heat to the point that the intake tube on the FIPK has bent slightly, and now rests on the bottom edge of the hole in the intake shield. While re-chraging my a/c, I figured out that this was the cause of a slight knock that I was hearing when the engine was cold. When the tube cooled down it tried to regain it's original shape. It rose up about 1/8" off the heat shield, and would vibrate against it until the headers heated the tube up enough to lay back down on the shield. I am now thinking about a different "cold air intake" along the lines that the engineers did with the original airbox. You know, not swooping down right over top of the exhaust manifold. I saw one where the filter is right where the original plenum went into the fender well. Does anyone remember what that setup was called?

you're probably thinking of the S&B setup... i'm debating between it and the FIPK

That's the one. Thanks. Is the filter that comes with it re-usable, and if so are the re-charge kits readily accessible?
