Default RE: Whom ever built thier own lockers, Need help!!

well first let me describe how a Detroit works (holds true with most other unselectable lockers).

when going straight and steping on the gas force will be applied to the pinion which locks the two axles. There will be a small dead spot when hitting the gas, The clutches (not Friction clutches) need to engage the wheels are now "locked". you will also hear a little clunk when this happens.

when letting off the gas the locker unlocks because there is no pressure on the pinion. You will also here a clunk if the gas is released quickly. If the gas is reapplied then there will be a small deadspot again and a slight clunk.

when cornering, because both axles are locked when gas is applied one tire can not spin faster than the other which can create some chirping , hoping and tread wear (not alot). If the gas is taken away when cornering the one axle will unlock and allow the outside tire to spin faster.
Now. If a little gas is applied when cornering you wont notice anything. If going over 30 when cornering you wont notice anything either.

Now the learning how to drive part

when driving on wet and snowy roads you cant power into turns. Otherwise the truck will try to go straight and make you want to change your underwear. (been there done that). You just have to release the gas a bit and you'll be fine.
Now the clunking.
I can drive my truck all day long and not hear a single clunk. But when my wife drives it it sounds like my driveshaft is off and hitting the bed.
This is because she lets off the gas real fast and starts real fast. If you apply small amounts of gas it will engage then you can floor it, or if starting from a stop you can do a slight brake stand just to lock the axles and then mash it.
whenletting off the gas you let off slowly.
Pretty easy.

I like the locker over the differential just because it is predictable. A open diff can have many symptoms depending on which side has more grip.
