auto to manual tranny conversion?>need imput<
alright boys i think i can start feeling my tranny going in my truck but im not going to replace it yet.... anway i wanted to start looking at some tranny's in the junk yard and all and i was really looking at 5 speeds... i drive a 5 speed at work ford f250 and its really nice i enjoy the clutch... and it just seems like you can get more power to the ground... anyway here is my questions.... if i got a 5 speed tranny out of another dodge ram would it bolt right up? would it be hard to do? would it be worth it? i would even give all the parts to a shop to do but i need to know if there worth it to do... or do i have to buy a whole 5 spd motor?
If it would be out of a 318/360 equipped truck, then it would bolt right up. You'd need a lot more than just the transmission though
And to have a shop do something like this for you would cost you big $$$

it would just bolt up, I believe the manual tranny is shorter and would require you to get a custom drive shaft or get the one that was in the truck you took it out of.
also you will definatley have to get a new computer.

well i would be taking everything i needed from the truck before i did it.... im just wondering if it would be worth it.... and i know the owner of the garage and he is a small garage so he isnt going to rape me... even if i had to i could prolly throw the tranny in there and driveshaft... its teh computer, drilling threw my cab for the shifter, the clutch lever and all that that i dont know what the hell im doing.... so worth it?
and what ALL do i need to do this?
and what ALL do i need to do this?
I dont have step by step instructions, but can give you a hint on what you will need. If anyone has to add/change what i post, please pipe up. I have done countless import tranny swaps, so here it goes:
Tranny with bell housing and tail shaft (if 2wd)
clutch
pressure plate with bolts
fly wheel with bolts
pilot bearing
release bearing
clutch slave and lines
brake, clutch, accelerator pedal assembly with bolts and hardware
inspection covers on front of tranny
xmember (not sure if you need it or can swap mounts) with bolts
tranny mount/s
engine computer and harness
driveshaft from similar truck with manual tranny (there is around 48-52 drive shaft possibilities)
shifter asembly
column for manual tranny truck (or disconect the auto one, I would personally swap the columns out)
shift boot and bezel with screws and brackets
speedo cluster from manual tranny truck
Things you have to think about:
Is your truck worht all the hassle to do this to?
Would you be better off selling your truck and buying a manual truck?
Is your truck 4x4?
When going throught with something like this, the best and easiest way to do it is to have a parts truck, with all the things you need and a weekend and also a clean clutter free shop for a weekend.
Well thats all I can think of right now, I believe I covered most of it. Any questions, Ill try to awnser to the best of my knowledge

at first i was looking at this swap, but decided it is not worth it.
Unless you can do the work yourself, and you enjoy it
and most import you have a donor truck to pull all the needed parts from just get teh automatic rebuilt.
it will be alot cheaper.
