Default U joints

Ok I just bought my truck from my step dad witch was better then buying from some one else because he knows ecerthing about it he has had it since 98 so I had a question. tghe truck scam with 3 probs 1 the windshield but i am getting that fixed today 2 a few dents and 3 somthing with the U joints in the tranny I dono I am not a very mechanical guy.

when I am driving and i let off the gas you know just coast theres a humming from the bottom of the truck. My step dad sais its somthing with he thinks the U joints like i said i am not a mechanical guy he said it shouldnt be a problem unless i push it to hard and shouldnt need to be fixed until it gets worse. I dont care what he says I just wana know what the heck it is you know.

I know i am not a bucket full of info but heres the facts

Humming while coasting
mainley does it in overdrive
somthing with tranny and U joints

I know I am making myself look really stupid but at least i can admit i am not a mechanical dude lol.

Did he take it and have it daignosed somewhere? Could you ask him to explain it again? There are no u-joints in the tranny [&:]

Sounds more like bearing problems than u-joints. [>:]

The drive shaft universals could cause this.

I dono I will ask him tomorw see he isnt the best guy to go to even though it was his truck. He is more audio/electronics he just bought a 86 mustang and hes restoring it some and he knows a portion of what hes doing otherwise hes doing it by the books. My dad lives in Texas and hes been a mechanic for years and I think hes looking for stuff for my truck now but not sure. People here in Kansas are big Ford fans so all my friends dads work with fords not dodges.

Ok I am ramboling I will try to get some more info on it as soon as i can.

Another question tonight as I was leaving work my right front tire was squealing and at first it started to smell liek some burnt rubber. I looked out the window and it wasnt flat. I was not stressing the steering colom it was only about half turned. So I get out look in the wheel well its not rubbing anything or what not.

my tired were straight when i was parked so it wasnt strressing anything or shouldnt have been. So i straghten out go foward adn then go back into my turn it does it again and i figured hell i have to turn anywways. When i was on the road i turned the wheel some more and nothign happend so i figured it was ok so i get home and look again but it started raining so i went inside. I will look in the morning when theres some light. I also have to check my window i got it replaced today adn its not soposed to be washed so i take that getting wet but its raining cats and dogs so i am going to check on it in the morning.

Would you happen to have been on smooth/slick concrete?

No it was not really smooth or slick and plus if i was why would burning rubber smell come from the tire? I checked the other tires and noting. I think their might have been somthing stuck and just feell out I am not sure it hasnt dne it today so.

If it's a humming noise it's more then likely a bearing. Most U-joints will make a clunk sound (for lack of an audio sample) when shifting from park to reverse to drive. Not in any order, just a change in the direction your drive shaft is spinning.

The front tire if anything could be from a callapsed brake line. Was it pulling to one side while your were trying to drive?

Good Luck. GP
