A/C not working right
hi all hopefully someone can help me out..my a/c seemt stop blowing cool air..i went and got some replacement freon(one that has the oil, sealer and gauge/ hose in the can ) plus 1 xtra can so i would be filling it up with 32 oz of freon...the guage i hooked up says low...when i try to charge it it go's into the red on the guage...could it be i am doing it wrong or is there something bigger going on?i hooked it up to the valve left of the canister...off the big line...,,does anyone have a idea or even a diagram of where i am to hook it to?
When charging you will get a high reading due to the pressure from the can. Best thing to do is charge for 3-4 seconds then wait til pressure needle settles. You want to hook freon to the low pressure fitting so check service manual to see where that is. Freon fitting will only mate with the low pressure fitting though so it would be hard to mess it up. Don't be surprised if you need more than 2 cans of freon.
theres 2 different valves to hook it onto. Make sure you are on the right one. One is a high side valve, the other is low side. One should have a red cap and the other should have a blue cap. Also make sure your truck is running and your ac is on when you are trying to charge it
neither valve had a cap on it....one valve fit the hose i put on it......but like i siad it just went fom empty...then i pulled the trigger to release freon then it jumps tothe red zone...i do think also i have a vacuum leak...when i do accelerate my the air go's from the vents to the defrost..
when you turn the ac on does the compressor clutch begin to spin or is it still? If its stuck you need a new compressor not refrigerant.

Just because it isnt turning doesnt mean that you need a new compressor right off. Compressors are designed to not turn if the are low on freon. The oil/lubricant in the freon lubes the compressor and if it gets low they are built to stop turning. I have charged several "stuck" compressors. Also the guage will read high for a minute or two until the freon is circulated through the lines then it should drop down and when the can is empty it should read accurately .
OK...I got up this morning in the rain to retry it the charging again...i hooked up the hose to the low line.. when hooked up it said low..i squeezed trigger it jumped to 65-70 psi..i took the advice and held the trigger for about 2 min....nothing change...i even checked off the line and the can released freon....

When I recharged my wife's car I followed this little tip. Have the vehicle running while you charge it. You can hear your AC kick on and off. If you're low it'll kick on and within a second or two kick right back off. This is because when it kicks on, the pressure drops and if it's low the pressure will drop too much and it won't have enough to compress it so it kicks back off. While you're charging it, it should kick on and stay on a little longer each time it kicks on. When it's kicked on, make sure you charge it to where the needle is in the safe zone, either green or blue i cant remember which one. While it's off it WILL read in the red and should. So make sure you can hear and be able to tell when the compressor is kicked on. Should hear a loud click followed by a slight drop in RPMs.
