ORIGINAL: RAPOM

I must have been misunderstood. I own a I6 Cummins Turbo Diesel and love it. I've owned the a jeep I6 4.0L, Ford I6, VW I5 and have liked them all, ran the ford with a chunk of metal in one of the cylinders for 12,000 miles. I am the biggest fan of the inline 6 cylinder. I'm a heavy equipment operator so I listen to 6 banger diesels all day long. I think the reason Ford and Chevy went with a V8 is so the didn't look like they were copying Dodge/Cummins.
I knew a guy with a Ford 300ci I6. He told me how that engine was referred to as "the poor man's diesel". We used to haul two round bales of hay with that truck up and down hills. Those round bales were about 800lbs each, and the truck handled them with ease. So well, in fact, that we didn't have to start from a dead stop in first gear. We always started in second. If I could have found a Ford with an I6 in my price range, I never would have bought my Dodge. Oh well.

I don't think copying Cummins is the reason Ford and GM made diesel V8's. People have been conditioned to believe V8's mean power, which they don't. They have horsepower, but not the low-end torque.
