ok, i put on 2 single 16" electric fans. now i need to ask a question about taking off the cluth fan. While i had trhe clutch off i took the fan blades off, but i pput the clutch back on. The water pump pulley had me puzzled im not sure how the pulley is supposed to stay on so i played it safe untill i could ask you guys. Would it be ok to take the clutch off and leave it or is there something else i need to do?

 

some of the pulleys are bolted to the flange on the water pump, some are pressed on from the factory. If you have a press on pulley you might want to drill a couple of holes for some retaining bolts just to be sure. Make sure the bolt holes are directly across from one another and you use the same bolt/nut combo to keep the balance right. then you should able to run without the fan clutch on.

 

mine must be a pressed on pully. What if i were to find a nut the size of the one on the clutch fan?

 

Shott did the electric fan conversion on his truck. From the looks of this pic: https://dodgeforum.com/upfiles/3936/...E3712E5636.jpg he didn't leave the fan clutch on.

It doesn't look like he installed any retaining bolts on the pulley either.

If you can wait a bit, he'll probably pop in and comment. Not sure how much he's on during the weekends though.

 

i didnt have to install any bolts,,, the water pump pully is on there... i made sure of this.. its either pressed on or forged together with the impeller shaft... the clutch on the other hand was a headache to take off.. the large nut would budge... took three of us to get it off... one prying the pull so it woulndt move.. another strapwrenching it for added support and the other with a monkey wrench up on that big nut.. took bout an hour to get off..

elec fans have been in for about 8 months.. and the water pump pully hasnt changed angles or moved at all..

 

well thanx shott and sorry to hear you had so much trouble with the nut. Afriend of mine where i was working on the truck tool it off with very little pressure at all.


ok what about the shroud is it a hendrence or would it help. What i did , i got a hold of 2 single 16" fans and using the shroud as part of the frame put them all together as one big unit. wht is your opinion shott?

 

thats what i did... removed the stock shroud and built a frame support for the two 16's and then sheetmetald the openings .. but i am debating and wondering if the fans themselves fixed right to the rad would be better... more effecient.. more velocity.. ive seen and heard guys not even using anything and just ziptying the fans to the rad (or used the fan mounting cables that are made for that) and working out fine..

personally if you like fabricating and have the time and the materials... go for it.. if not.. then screw it.. not sure if a shroud will help or not.. since the 16's pull soo much air.. and i really dont have any way of testing if a shroud/shroudless fan setup would differ, besides current draw and legth of time they are on for.

 

Have already used the shroud as part of the fans, was easy with a little help from my buddy. and ive heard too many horror stories about using the ties that come with the fans. Heard that they rub holes in radiator over time. will try to get pics of my setup later today. Thought yours was a factory job, looks good!

 

I wouldn't think it would be a good idea to strap it to the core of the rad. The extra mechanical stress on the core while off roading can't be good on the rad. I would think it would just be a matter of time before you get a leak.
