Default Rev and speed limiter?

Some crazy old guy at a local dealership told me that on my truck (95 auto ram 1500 318) If I hit top speed and shut the truck off and pulled the chip out of the ecu, wait a minute or two, then put it back in, it will erase the rev and speed limiters. Myth or fact?

Are you saying your pulling that chip while coasting after hitting top speed and turning the truck off? That sounds dangerous??!!

I'm sure he meant coast to a stop then pull the chip.

Myth

The ECU on your truck has burnt in speed and rev limiters. Not programmed in like the 96+ trucks....BURNT in. The only way to change them is to get an ECU that has different ones burnt into it. Only one I know of is the Mopar Performance PCM.

The only confirmed "work-around" for the speed limiter is to turn the key to the START position when you hit the limiter. It's crazy and stupid though in my opinion. Then again, that's just my opinion.

I'm just trying to find free/cheap performance gains before I start spending money on bolt ons. Surely there are some secrets that I can do in the garage or some secret salvage yard parts that I can use to help out.

How will removing the speed/rev limiter help your performance? [&:]

There aren't really any mods that are free. If you wanna go fast, you have to pay up front.

A self-built cold air intake and the viper rocker swap are probably the cheapest mods you'll find.

But there's a difference between buying a bunch of parts...and buying the RIGHT parts.

very true. the right parts helps. Do you notice much on the performance from the rockers? I want a mopar computer. I wish my truck had a higher rev limiter. It pulls so hard from 3000 rpms til it shifts at 4850.

Why would you want to push your motor farther than that though? The 318 isn't a high RPM motor. The tach changes color there for a reason

I don't have the Viper rockers in my truck. I'm not sure if they even work on the V10. The people that have done the swap have noticed a slight improvement though. If I remember, it's around a $40 or $50 swap.

If you want a mopar computer, find my Mopar PCM ebay thread and see if there's one that will work with your truck.

I want it to shift higher cuz it feels like it's really starting to pull then it shifts. If I manually shift it I can get it to about 5200 and pulls real hard to that point too. The rev limiter hits about 5250.

Then you'll have to put a shift kit in. The computer doesn't control the shifting. The transmission that you have in your truck is hydraulic. You can also adjust your TV cable. If you do a search, you will find info about it.
